PRESS RELEASE
TSSS 2026 Highlights Human Rights and Dignity in the Seafood Industry
On 23 October 2026, The Sustainable Seafood Summit (TSSS) 2026, organized by Seafood Legacy Co., Ltd. and Nikkei ESG has highlighted the importance of promoting human rights in sustainable seafood resourcing. Ahead of two human rights, includingpanel discussions, a keynote speech was delivered by Pichamon Yeophantong, Expert Member of the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights. Titled "The Dignity Mandate: Why International Labor Standards are a Corporate Imperative,” the keynote highlighted the importance of international labor standards and human dignity in seafood business operations, emphasizing that respect for human rights must be recognized as an essential part of responsible and sustainable business practices.
“The true measure of sustainability lies not only with how we care for our oceans, but also with how we treat the people whose livelihoods depend upon them. For the seafood industry, these two dimensions of sustainability are inseparable.” - Pichamon Yeophantong, Expert Member of the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights
Following the keynote, the first panel"The Voice of Dignity I: Elevating Human Rights at the Center of the Seafood Business Operation" brings together Ryutaro Ogawa (Secretary General of the Certified Non-profit Organization Human Rights Now), Yi-hsiang Shih (Senior Researcher of the Taiwan Association for Human Rights), JongChul Kim (Senior Researcher of the APIL, South Korea), Jeremia Humolong Prasetya (Program Director of the Indonesia Ocean Justice Initiative), and Daniel Awigra (Executive Director of HRWG and Co-founder of BEBESEA). The session aims to encourage dialogue on placing human dignity at the center of seafood business operations, particularly by listening to workers and communities directly affected by industry practices. It also offers an opportunity to strengthen regional cooperation and explore approaches that go beyond compliance toward meaningful social impact.
Building on this dialogue, "The Voice of Dignity II: Addressing Human Rights Risks in Supply Chains" explores practical approaches to identifying, preventing, and addressing human rights risks. The session features Wawi Suroso (Head of the General Affairs Division of the Ministry of Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection), Panyarak Roque (Country Director of the Dignity in Work for All, Thailand), Ryo Takahashi (Sustainability and Compliance Officer of the Marubeni Seafoods Corp.), Satoshi Matsumoto (Brand Strategy Division, Sustainability Strategy Department of the Japanese Consumers' Co-operative Union), and Aiko Yamauchi (COO/ Vice President of the Seafood Legacy). Bringing together government, civil society, and business perspectives, the discussion highlights opportunities for stronger cooperation and responsible practices across seafood supply chains.
Nine representatives of Indonesian unions working with fishery workers participated in the Summit, invited by Indonesia’s NGO Coalition for the International Human Rights Advocacy (HRWG) and Better Engagement Between East and Southeast Asia (BEBESEA).
“Fisheries conferences often celebrate environmental certifications and fishing quotas, yet turn a blind eye to the hands that haul in the nets. True sustainability is measured not only by the preservation of fish populations in our oceans, but also by the dignity, protection, and rights of the workers aboard fishing vessels.” - Chairman of Pejuang Suara Pelaut, M Kafandi.
Held annually since 2015, TSSS is one of Asia's largest sustainable seafood platforms, bringing together businesses, experts, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders. In its 11th year, the Summit has given greater attention to human rights, including dedicated discussions on labor conditions and human rights in seafood supply chains. This growing recognition is also reflected in the selection of two human rights initiatives as a finalist and an honorable mention for Japan Sustainable Seafood Awards (JSSA) 2026.

SIARAN PERS
Membuka, dua sesi diskusi panel mengenai hak asasi manusia, Pichamon Yeophantong, Expert Member, UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights, menyampaikan Keynote bertajuk "The Dignity Mandate: Why International Labor Standards are a Corporate Imperative".
Setelah itu, sesi panel pertama bertajuk "The Voice of Dignity I: Elevating Human Rights at the Center of the Seafood Business Operation" menghadirkan Ryutaro Ogawa (Human Rights Now, Jepang), Yi-hsiang Shih (Taiwan Association for Human Rights), JongChul Kim (APIL, Korea Selatan), Jeremia Humolong Prasetya (Indonesia Ocean Justice Initiative), serta Daniel Awigra (Direktur Eksekutif HRWG dan salah satu pendiri BEBESEA).
Setelah sesi tersebut,, sesi kedua bertajuk "The Voice of Dignity II: Addressing Human Rights Risks in Supply Chains" digelar membahas berbagai pendekatan praktis untuk mengidentifikasi, mencegah, dan menangani risiko pelanggaran hak asasi manusia.
Sesi ini menghadirkan Wawi Suroso (Kementerian Pelindungan Pekerja Migran Indonesia), Panyarak Roque (Dignity in Work for All, Thailand), Ryo Takahashi (Marubeni Seafoods Corp.), Satoshi Matsumoto (Japanese Consumers' Co-operative Union), dan Aiko Yamauchi (Seafood Legacy).
Between East and Southeast Asia (BEBESEA).
— M. Kafandi, Ketua Pejuang Suara Pelaut (PSP).

BEBESEA(Better Engagement Between East and Southeast Asia)の招きにより、漁業労働者を代表するインドネシアの労働組合から9名がサミットに参加しました。
