With a work of audio poetry, May Myat Zaw tells the story of an exiled woman from the Thai-Myanmar border who sends a letter to her imprisoned friends. But like her, stateless and unheard, the letter never reaches its destination.
430km (English)
From the border town
To the prison gate, the distance is
430 kilometres …
From a distance to a distance
A letter was sent.
This letter travelled down the Salween River
And when it reached the checkpoint
The prison guards tore it apart.
The reason is
A letter should not have
English words in it.
Especially,
About the jet fighters that have been flying daily for 3 years,
And the 500-lb bombs
Dropped from those planes,
And the schools destroyed
By those bombs,
Nothing of the sort can be written in it.
Don’t even mention about the
Lightning-struck living costs.
Expressions of personal feelings
And the poetry lines
Are also strictly banned
In the letter.
Truth be told, nothing disrespectful of the state should ever be written.
Censorship has become the language level
That has reduced human communication
To the barest minimum.
In fact,
There’s one piece of news I’ve always wanted to share.
But I fully understand that it’d never make it through to the inside.
‘Friends outside are dead.’
‘Friends outside are dead.’
‘Friends outside are all dead.’
Likewise,
There’s a news story
That never made it out.
‘Friends inside are dead.’
‘Friends inside are dead.’
‘Friends inside are all dead.’
