Toolkit for Media Campaign by Migrant, Displaced and Stateless Communities: A Helpful Guide to Start Your Own Media Campaign!
We are delighted to publish our new toolkit "Toolkit for Media Campaign by Migrant, Displaced, and Stateless Communities: A Helpful Guide to Start Your Own Media Campaign!"
This toolkit is a product of a co-learning process with representatives of 11 migrant organizations operating in countries across Southeast and East Asia through a series of workshops conducted by BEBESEA with the facilitation of four amazing experts. Using a participatory approach and practical examples, this toolkit provides migrants and their advocates with a guide for media campaigning aimed at creating positive changes. The toolkit follows four steps: 1) Telling Your Story to Make an Impact; 2) Making Effective Use of Social Media; 3) Working with the Mainstream Media; and 4) Staying Safe in Digital Space.
This toolkit was developed based on concerns about a lack of representation of migrant, refugee, and stateless communities, while migration has become one of the hottest topics in public debate. Many media outlets often publish stories about migration and displacement. However, these stories are rarely told by people who experience migration, displacement, or statelessness. Few of these stories are told to create positive change in society or to improve the situation of migrants, refugees or stateless communities.
There is a lack of political, social and cultural representation of migrant communities in society, including in the media. Migrants are rarely part of the political constituency, especially in their host countries. They are often stigmatised and discriminated against in the societies in which they live. This includes negative images and narratives about migrants in the media. Meaningful participation can only be achieved with representation, especially by those who are underrepresented.
This toolkit aims to contribute to the confidence and capacity building of migrants and advocates. It encourages them to take initiative and control in telling their stories. It suggests using various media platforms to create a positive impact. It also highlights how to protect the security and safety of individuals and community members.
We are grateful for the generous support of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, which made this toolkit production possible.
